Best of British

With the coronation of King Charles III still fresh in our minds, we think it’s an appropriate time to wave the flag and celebrate the best of British.

We have a range of the best and the most important films to have come out of Britain. From British directors like Stanley Kubrick, David Lean, Ridley Scott and Alfred Hitchcock. And from iconic British film studios like Ealing Studios and Hammer. We have the risqué humour of the carry on films and the gritty social commentary of the kitchen sink dramas of the 1960’s. And, of course, James Bond 007, the greatest, most enduring character franchise in cinema history.

This isn’t just a collection of old movie posters, though, it’s a social history of Britain. These posters capture the zeitgeist of each period, showing how people felt, how they lived and what they cared about. In addition to movie posters, I’ve included a few newsreel documentaries that used to show in British cinemas before we all had TVs. These include posters for the last London Olympics in 1948 (XIV Olympiad), Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953 and England’s triumph in the 1966 World Cup (Goal!). And for good measure, there’s some British posters that are not cinema related at all – public information posters from the war years to keep spirits up in those dark days (Keep Calm and Carry on). And finally, there’s some pantomime posters from the 1930’s. Nothing is more British than a panto, the finest form of theatre in the world. “Oh, no it isn’t… Oh yes, it is“ (if you didn’t understand that, you’ve never been to a pantomime).
